Revenue and spending

Total revenue for 2017-18 is expected to be $444.4 billion, an increase of 7.8 per cent on estimated revenue in 2016-17. Total expenses for 2017-18 are expected to be $464.3 billion, an increase of 3.0 per cent on estimated expenses in 2016-17

Where revenue comes from (2017-18)

 

The chart shows relative sizes of the sources of revenue. Individuals income tax is the largest source of revenue followed, in order, by: Company and resource rent taxes; sales taxes; non-tax revenue; fuels excise; customs duty; superannuation taxation; other taxation; fringe benefits tax; and other excise.

Social security and welfare constitutes the largest contribution to expense followed, in order, by: other purposes; Health; Education; Defence and General Public Services
